The IMRF's #FutureSAR initiative identifies the key challenges the global maritime search and rescue (SAR) industry will face due to climate change. It proposes guidance and best practices to aid rescue operations in the future. As part of this, we spoke with Berit Letting, Head of Section for New Builds at the Norwegian Sea Rescue Society in Norway.

Berit emphasised that the current technology for first responders is not yet at an optimal level. She encouraged SAR organisations to assess their capabilities and areas of operation to combat climate change actively. In Norway, Berit noted that while rising sea levels might not be as significant a concern, there is a noticeable impact from harsher weather patterns.

Recognising the influential position of SAR organisations in society, Berit stressed the importance of raising awareness about climate change. She highlighted the role SAR plays in informing the public about safe sea conditions, emphasising the need for a proactive approach. Berit suggested that SAR organisations adapt their mindset, operate efficiently, and carefully choose resources to align with climate-conscious practices. Additionally, she underscored the crucial role of ongoing crew training in maintaining preparedness and effectiveness in changing environmental conditions.
