The #SaferSAR initiative is designed to improve safety at sea by encouraging SAR professionals to share lessons learned from incidents and accidents. Our global system, developed in partnership with CHIRP, collates data from SAR units, analyses it to identify trends and safety risks, and shares the findings with the SAR community. This information is disseminated through the Global Safety Learning Logs, published three times a year and distributed via IMRF channels.
To contribute, SAR professionals can submit a report directly through the reporting platform (see below). By using the reporting platform, SAR organisations can gain valuable insights into operational safety risks, recognise recurring patterns, and exchange best practices with peers worldwide—ultimately enhancing mission safety and saving more lives at sea.
Additionally, the IMRF partnered with Cranfield University on a research collaboration, funded by Lloyd's Register Foundation. It investigated how safety practices are adopted and implemented across various maritime search and rescue (SAR) settings to identify the factors that influence their success or failure. The research team invited IMRF SAR members from anywhere in the world to participate in interviews conducted by Cranfield University, particularly those with experience in the use of life jackets, crew resource management (CRM), and call-out procedures. You can read a summary of our findings, read the full report and listen to a podcast here.
