The IMRF has released the second edition of its Global SAR Safety Learning Log, continuing its mission to support safer operations across the maritime search and rescue (SAR) community. These logs provide critical insights from real-world SAR operations, helping crews, managers, and regulators learn from incidents, near misses, and operational challenges without assigning blame.

SAR work will always involve risk, but by reporting and sharing experiences, we can better protect those who go out to save others. The Global SAR Safety Learning Log captures key lessons across a wide range of operational scenarios, from night navigation and high-speed drills to equipment issues and emergency procedures, allowing the SAR community to identify patterns, address risks, and strengthen safety culture globally.

“This is not about pointing fingers; it’s about learning and improving together,” said Jaakko Heikkilä, International Programme Manager at the IMRF. “Every report submitted contributes to a collective understanding that makes SAR operations safer for everyone.”

The logs draw on contributions from IMRF member organisations and individual SAR practitioners worldwide, highlighting operational realities that often go unreported. They emphasise proactive safety measures, situational awareness, effective communication, and robust training, reinforcing the importance of a safety-first mindset in high-pressure environments.

How to Get Involved

The Global SAR Safety Learning Log relies on contributions from the wider SAR community. There are several ways to engage:

  • Submit individual incident reports via the IMRF reporting platform.
  • Share anonymised data from your organisation’s internal reporting system.
  • Integrate your reporting processes with the Global SAR system through regular data uploads.

Every report helps prevent similar incidents elsewhere. The strength of the initiative lies in collective input and shared experience, ensuring that lessons learned anywhere in the world benefit the entire SAR community.

The second edition of the Global SAR Safety Learning Log is now available here. As always, the report includes practical guidance and a QR code for submitting new safety reports, helping the community continue to learn, share, and improve together.
