The IMRF is calling on members to share their operational insights ahead of the next ICAO-IMO Joint Working Group on Search and Rescue (SAR) meeting in early November 2025. The latest IMO briefing note highlights a range of important issues shaping global maritime SAR policy, including the reliability of Radar SARTs, improvements to 406 MHz beacon and AIS homing, SAR response to submersibles, integration of new satellite and smartphone technologies, and emerging guidance on the psychology of emergency response.

Training standards are also under review, with updates to Model Courses for On-Scene and Mission Coordinators underway, and the IMRF is opposing any suggestions to reduce SAR training requirements under the STCW Convention. Concerns have also been raised regarding the emerging Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) Code and its potential impact on SAR responsibilities. Other topics include passenger ship cooperation plans, recovery of deceased persons at sea, and two-way EPIRB communication via the Galileo Return Link service.

IMRF members wishing to provide feedback on any of these items are encouraged to contact Roly McKie, the IMRF IMO Representative and SAR Advisor, [email protected], ahead of the November meeting. To view the full document, go to our Members portal, Members Briefing section here
