The 2025 IMRF Annual Meeting, held on 12-13 November in Poole, UK, was a resounding success, gathering colleagues, friends, partners, and members from across the maritime SAR community. Under the theme Working in Partnership - #BetterTogether, the meeting offered a unique opportunity to share knowledge, strengthen connections, and explore innovative approaches to saving lives at sea.

The first day focused on the UK’s SAR system, highlighting how collaboration underpins successful maritime rescue operations. Delegates gained exclusive access to key sites, including the HM Coastguard Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC UK) and Bristow’s SAR Helicopter Base, where they learned how aeronautical and maritime SAR missions are coordinated and executed. Later, attendees enjoyed a behind-the-scenes tour of the RNLI Poole Lifeboat Station, followed by an informal networking dinner at the RNLI College and a virtual celebration of the IMRF Awards 2025.

Day two showcased the IMRF’s global impact and highlighted strategies to strengthen SAR capabilities worldwide. Caroline Jupe, CEO of IMRF, alongside Roly McKie and Steve Wills, updated delegates on the organisation’s advocacy work with international bodies including the IMO, ICAO, ICRC, WHO, and UNHCR. Members then took the floor during two engaging Member Focus sessions, sharing operational practices, accident case studies, innovations, and research that are shaping the future of SAR.

A workshop on climate adaptation, led by Karl Schultz (Climate Adaptation Works) and Jaakko Heikkilä (IMRF), introduced the new SAR Climate Change Impact Response Card, providing attendees with a practical tool to assess climate-related risks and plan adaptive actions for SAR organisations. Aviation SAR developments were presented by Roly McKie and Bristow, followed by a hands-on workshop on Rescue Craft Model Training with Roly McKie and David Whiddon (RNLI). The meeting concluded with Jaakko Heikkilä presenting IMRF’s plans for 2026, and Caroline Jupe summarising the discussions and achievements of the two days.

The Annual Meeting was not only a platform for learning but also a celebration of the collaborative spirit that drives the global SAR community. Delegates left inspired, equipped with practical tools, new insights, and strengthened networks to enhance safety at sea.

A huge thanks to all members, speakers, panellists, and partners who attended, making the event a truly memorable and impactful gathering. Your commitment, expertise, and passion continue to advance IMRF’s mission to save lives worldwide.

Thank you also to our hosts, the RNLI and HMCG, for hosting this year’s Annual Meeting.
