Zhu Ruihong, Vice President of the Zhenjiang Jingkou Life Saving Association, has dedicated his over 20-year career to exploring and preserving life-saving's historical and cultural heritage in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu Province, China.

“My journey into maritime search and rescue (SAR) began with a passion for conserving the legacy of the Jingkou Life Saving Association, which traces its roots to the Xijin Ferry, an ancient ferry with over 1,400 years of history,” Zhu said.

The first lifesaving boat in Zhenjiang dates to 1026, and the Jingkou Life Saving Association boasts a nearly 400-year history of organised lifesaving activities. With the support of the China Diving and Salvage Association and the Zhenjiang Foundation for Justice and Courage, the Association was officially relaunched on 30 November 2023. This integrates the expertise of professionals from various fields, united in their commitment to advancing water safety initiatives.

The Jingkou Life Saving Association is deeply rooted in the humanitarian mission of rescuing individuals from drowning. Its core activities focus on two pillars:

  • Rescue operations: The Association’s rescue activities cover major water areas within its jurisdiction. With more than 300 volunteers and multiple rescue stations and branches, it collaborates with over ten volunteer teams to execute water rescue missions efficiently.
  • Promoting a life-saving culture: It also conducts emergency drills, safety lectures, and public education campaigns to raise awareness and teach lifesaving skills. Social media plays a significant role in spreading this culture.

Zhu added: “Training is crucial for our organisation, particularly for those working in aquatic environments. By providing professional training, we equip aquatic workers with essential rescue skills and foster a culture of safety awareness. This ensures readiness in emergencies and enhances the overall efficacy of our lifesaving efforts.”

The training programme will launch in 2025 and be rolled out in phases. It includes sessions on operating lifesaving equipment such as small rescue boats and drones. The main goal is to equip the members of the newly established Jinshanhu Life Saving Branch and Changjiang Rescue Station with essential rescue skills, including proficiently operating lifesaving equipment such as small rescue boats and unmanned aerial vehicles.

“We also aim to ensure they obtain the necessary qualification certificates.”

Zhu oversees daily operations, develops civilian life-saving branches, and ensures the seamless conduct of rescue missions. His responsibilities include mobilising resources, promoting cultural heritage, and fostering community unity. Notable moments in his career include archaeological discoveries at the ancient Jingkou Life Saving Association site and the publication of a comprehensive study on the evolution of life-saving culture along the Yangtze River.

The Jingkou Life Saving Association has a century-long legacy of lifesaving efforts. Notable achievements include rescuing 720 individuals from 1889 to 1891, as well as saving 57 lives between 2021 and 2022. However, the association still faces challenges, especially in securing funding and acquiring advanced equipment. Increased support from the community and greater volunteer involvement are crucial for overcoming these obstacles.

“Collaboration is at the heart of our mission. Partnering with government agencies, private entities, and volunteer organisations amplifies our impact. Volunteers play a vital role in our operations, and we strive to inspire and retain them through training, recognition, and a supportive environment,” he added.

Becoming a member of the Jingkou Life Saving Association provides opportunities to participate in water rescue operations, acquire professional skills, and embrace the humanitarian spirit of lifesaving. Jingkou welcomes passionate individuals to join their mission and become ambassadors of this important cultural heritage.

“Joining the IMRF enables us to share China's lifesaving culture globally, learn from international practices, and improve our rescue capabilities. By collaborating with the IMRF, we aim to expand our impact and showcase the rich traditions of Jingkou's lifesaving culture on an international stage.

The revival of the Jingkou Life Saving Association is a testament to the enduring spirit of humanitarianism and cultural heritage. As we pursue our mission, we look forward to deeper collaborations, greater achievements in water safety, and the opportunity to share our story with the world,” Zhu concluded.
