A Message from the IMRF CEO As we near the end of 2024, I feel a deep sense of pride and gratitude as I reflect on the remarkable achievements of the IMRF and our global search and rescue (SAR) community over the past year. Together, we have significantly impacted the safety and well-being of individuals worldwide, advancing our mission to improve global SAR capabilities. Although we are a small team, we have been supported by an incredible network of member organisations, volunteers, and partners. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed — whether by hosting events, providing funding, or volunteering your expertise — to help make this year a success. Highlights of 2024 This year, our collective efforts have delivered a measurable impact: SAR Leadership and Advocacy: We launched the next phase of the #SaferSAR campaign, published the sector’s first report on climate transition, Tides of Change, and established our Aeronautical Panel to bring greater inclusivity to SAR efforts. Training and Mentorship: Our #WomenInSAR initiatives flourished, with training courses and mentoring programmes connecting over 45 women globally. Our Lifeboat Crew Exchange also brought together 51 crew members from 11 countries for invaluable skill-sharing. Sector Innovation: We developed the #SARyouOK? mental health guidance, fostering resilience and support within SAR organisations and digital resources further enabled capacity-building worldwide. Global Engagement: From hosting 10 Global Maritime SAR Forums to publishing three new guidance documents, attending major international events and playing a central role in advocating for the global maritime SAR community at the IMO, particularly around MASS and the potential implications that the MASS code could have on the global SAR system, we amplified the voice of the SAR community on critical global stages. Digital Expansion: With a revamped members’ area and growing online SAR Academy, we’ve enhanced access to training and resources for SAR professionals across the globe. Celebrating Collaboration None of this would have been possible without your support. Our 140 member organisations from over 50 countries, alongside countless volunteers, partners, and contributors, have collectively conducted thousands of life-saving operations this year. Whether attending webinars, participating in working groups, or sharing best practices, your engagement is the foundation of our success. By the Numbers In 2024: Over 300 individuals participated in face-to-face training events. More than 450 people attended our online webinars Three new guidance documents were published to advance SAR practices. Social media engagement soared, with an audience growth of 5.4% year on year and a 19.8% increase in followers on Facebook and LinkedIn. We forged new partnerships, for example, with CHIRP, laying the groundwork for impactful projects in 2025. Looking Ahead As we prepare for 2025, our resolve to enhance global SAR capabilities is stronger than ever. Key goals include expanding membership, hosting our first regional meeting in Australia, and convening the sixth Mass Rescue Operations conference in Sweden (G6). We will continue to build on initiatives like #FutureSAR, deepen partnerships, and support our members and the broader global community as we advance the mission of improving global SAR capabilities in all parts of the globe. Here’s to a successful and impactful 2025. Thank you for being part of our community and may you and your teams have a safe and joyous festive season.
