Clay Evans, Superintendent, Canadian Coast Guard

Finalist of the IMRF Awards 2019 Category: Lifetime Achievement

Clay Evans has dedicated over 30 years of service to maritime search and rescue. He began as a rescue boat student, joining the Coast Guard as a Navigator after graduation.

He has served on a wide array of rescue cutters and motor lifeboats, as well as in rescue co-ordination and management.

He is currently Superintendent for Maritime Search & Rescue in Western Canada, but over his long career, he has served as teacher, has overseen the entry into service of the Cape Class Lifeboats, was instrumental in opening the Canadian Coast Guard SAR school in Bamfield BC and trained as a paramedic.

He continues to be a role model and mentor within the Canadian Coast Guard.

He is a published author and has written extensively about aspects of SAR operations around the world.

Clay also holds the CCG Exemplary service and Diamond Jubilee medals.

He has saved countless lives at sea, and his work continues to support and improve Canada's maritime lifesaving system.

Today he is a key member of the North Pacific Coast Guard forum, as part of the Emergency Response working group, while championing the development of a new Indigenous Coast Guard Auxiliary Service.

Mr Evans was nominated for being an extraordinary officer, leader and public servant who continues to share his knowledge and experience with the generation of mariners following in his footsteps.

People known to be in distress need to be rescued, of course – and the SAR community knows that this concept must also be extended to those believed to be in distress, and to those who, while not yet in distress, will become so if help is not provided to them in the meantime.
